I agree about landing pages as it is something I recommend on a daily basis to my clients for their online marketing campaigns.

At the very least it would be best for http://www.mountainbikes.com.au to redirect through to the Mountain Bikes page http://www.bicyclestore.com.au/Mountain-Bikes-c-266.html
of the site at http://www.bicyclestore.com.au as it takes away one more step that the vistor has to make to find what they are looking for.

I agree with all the points above. The problem though (and there lies the opportunity), is that most multiple domain owners just point the domains back to their home page.

To really maximize the value and opportunity, landing pages with highly relevant keyword content is required. The extra effort will be rewarded many times over…

NB: In the interest of full disclosure, I run a domain registrar specializing in catching expired com.au domains, so I like it when people buy many domains

I don’t know anything about .com.au, but I did some basic (PHPLD) development of hyphenated http://irish-bar.com about 2 years ago, then left it alone. Now it has #1 position for numerous city/country/irish/pub/bar searches in Google, Yahoo and Bing.

On a few good days it has made about $0.02 on Adsense!

Good post and smart observation. Let’s not forget the two other important benefit that multiple domain names brings besides increased traffic. Namely protection from competitors inruding in your name space and growth arms.

What most people fail to understand is that domain names are one-of-a-kind. Each one I have is one less that a competitor or start-up can own.

This is what makes them so valuable IMO.

My company owns over 1100 domain names relating to our training search engine. That’s a lot of increased traffic, security from competitors, and potential growth avenues.
