The thing that strikes me most is the shift from thoughts that domaining is something you can do on your own, set up, click go and reap the rewards to an actual business.

How many of us could run 1 let alone 2 or more businesses in the physical world on our own?

What is brilliant is that the online space should allow people to focus on what they really are passionate about. Morgan has a passion for the start up scene and fashion and so combines the two in FashionMetric.com. I know this will be successful because its run by a passionate business owner.

If we can all look to our portfolios and find the name that we truly are passionate about and start to build that out slowly and as per the lean start up methodology we might all profit in many more ways than just in our bank account!

Hi Jock, I only own three .net.au domains -

MiningJobs.net.au
CamperTrailers.net.au
VendingMachines.net.au

None of them are parked or developed so I can’t give you a view point on how my domains have performed, yet anyway!

Of course IMHO they are never as good as the .com.au versions of the name and there is always the risk if I develop the domains and they become popular / successful, that there could be some traffic bleed off to the .com.au domains.

There are many debates in the domaining community as to whether a .net.au can rank in the SERP’s as well as a .com.au and I would say that any domain given the proper focus with SEO etc can attain decent rankings on Google or other search engines. I do know of several experienced Australian domainers who are buying .net.au domains with the intention of development so there may be some hope for the .net.au extension.

Ask me again in a year or two after I have developed them and I may have a better answer for you than that one. LOL

Thanks for your comments. Yes when I said that they picked it up for a “song” I was referring to a company the size of Woolworths it is a drop in the ocean to them.

To most other domain investors it would be a very large purchase.

I just hope they do it justice and don’t leave it locked away in a cupboard somewhere like Wesfarmers did.

That said, big corporates have failed to capitalise on valuable domains before – Wesfarmers are a prime example of this having the hardware.com.au domain collecting dust in their own portfolio.

A domain like that should be built out – I’m glad it has found a new home.

I do have a question:

Well, I believe each dotcom domain costs like $0.30 for verisign to maintain, yet they charge like $6 to registrars for each domain name. And they even keep increasing prices while technology costs go down, so those enormous profit margins are even expanding… at the expense of the pockets of domain holders. (I bet this issue is a very serious one for a company like namedia.com for the number of domains it holds)

What does Frank think about this? Does he see any positive changes? maybe by 2012? (when the agreement between verisign and ICANN expires)… or will there be more of what seems to be the abuse of a monopoly, and all domain owners plus the whole domain industry paying this huge tax to them?

The .co may challenge the .org or the .net but it will take many many years even for that to happen.

My thoughts, if .co’s can on average resell for 5% – 20% of .com prices that will be an achivement in itself.

Will .co ever compete with .com – NO.

I don’t know about everyone else but talk about holding domain names for 10+ years is a high risk proposition. 10 years ago Google was unheard of, now it dominates the planet.

In the online and tech world it pays not to look too much further than a couple of years ahead.

No Will, not Newbie Domainers but Ignorant, know it all (but know nothing) Newbie Domainers!

If they would shut their traps for 2 seconds and learn about domaining before making all sorts of useless comments then they may learn something!

I know many new people to the domain industry that are very very switched on and study the system before jumping in and making stupid mistakes that could have been avoided if they had just taken the time to learn from people who know what they are talking about not just think they do.

Yes the .Co does have value but as you said Em, nothing will unseat the .Com as the king of the gTLD’s

Yes I agree that it has a good chance of overtaking the .info in a short space of time but it will be a great deal longer to beat the.net.

Time will tell!

About co v. Com I haven’t heard anyone reasonable claiming co will surpass com but the real question is whether it will surpass .net or .info. Given it’s huge start I’d bet .co will easily surpass .info, and thee real test will be t see if it surpasses net.

Totally agree that .CO will not knock .COM off the number 1 spot in the “next few years”. And I also own about 20 .co domains.

When I told my friends and associates about .CO, they thought it was fairly crazy, and most agreed that the only way .CO was going to do better than .biz, .blah, .whatever was for a global brand to adopt and advertise their .CO.

Made sense.

I figured I’d have to wait a year before my mother ever knew that .CO was not a type-o in her address bar.

But I was encouraged to find out that twitter would be using t.co. Why? because every third twitter post includes a bit.ly shortened URL. That’s why everyone (even my mom) is familiar with bit.ly. And as they make t.co the “even shorter” URL shortener, I expect every sixth post to be a t.co fairly quickly – in other words, I won’t have to worry about some big brand adopting and advertising .CO. Twitter is going to do that for us.

And I should mention that even godaddy.com has a URL shortener…x.co.

I think, like you, that unlike .biz and .blahs, .CO will go much farther much faster.

Take #1 from .COM in the next few years? No. Take #2 in 1 year, probably.

Maybe demand is picking up a bit as a few more players enter the market? thoughts?

There are loads of international domainer pundits that can fill in for Frank, but the Australian domainer blogging landscape is rather bleak without you…

Don’t forget that the term “Solar Panels”is just one “Exact Match” keyword we are talking about there relating to Solar Panels and my traffic is coming from hundreds of other long tail “Solar Panel” related keywords as well.

Such as “solar panels cost in india”, “solar panel costs”, etc and there are over 304 keyword phrases listed in my Google Analytics report.

I have not noticed any drop in what I have been selling my names for. But the best is still to come for Indian names.

The thing is it is already happening in many countries where the .com is associated with being an American address and the local ccTLD is used much more.

This is the the case in Australia, UK, Germany etc etc etc. The next few years are going to be huge for ccTLD’s, its just basic common sense!
