Google vs Type In Traffic, Which is more reliable?

A very interesting article on Forbes.com about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Saboteurs and how SEO experts can manipulate the search engines to negatively effect the competitors rankings. I am not quite sure how accurate this is but it does put some questions into my mind?? Would you rather have free type in traffic to your site that is not controlled by the search engines? or would you rather leave it in the hands of Google, Yahoo etc to govern where you visitors are coming from if at all!

This is even more evidence that spending some money to buy a good quality generic domain name for your business or product rather than relying on just the search engines for your traffic.
