Indoor wedge fitting is not enough: Why you need on-course verification

Your swing may look perfect on an indoor mat, but on the course the ball does not fly as the numbers suggest. Jerry Azurin, product manager for fitting at Cleveland/Srixon/XXIO, points out that indoor wedge fitting is only a starting point, not the finish line. Inside the fitting studio, launch monitors measure angle of attack, strike location, spin and launch direction without interference from wind, temperature, humidity or dirt. These numbers are clean and measurable, but a golf course is not a laboratory. The turf, soil firmness, bunker sand and weather all change how a wedge interacts with the ball. Azurin stresses that a golfer with a steep angle of attack may feel fine on a mat because the mat is too forgiving. On soft or natural turf, however, the sole can dig too deep, causing loss of control. Launch-monitor data such as angle of attack and low point only help the fitter make a partial judgement, not fully recreate real turf interaction. The fitting process Azurin describes is not purely number-driven. The fitter asks: How is your current wedge performing? What shots do you need from 80 yards and in? What do you want to change? Only then does the fitter recommend wedge model, bounce and heel relief. If you rely solely on machine data, you may end up with a wedge set that looks great on paper but fails in real situations. Another vital detail is the golf ball. Azurin advises fitting with the exact ball you play on the course. Range balls are often worn, scuffed and have entirely different spin and feel characteristics, leading to misleading numbers. The ball is the ultimate scoring tool, so it cannot be separated from the fitting process. However, golfers should also acknowledge a limitation: Azurin represents Cleveland/Srixon/XXIO, so the fitting result may be limited to that brand family. A wedge considered optimal in the studio may not be the best choice when compared with other brands. Players should treat the process as a reference, not an absolute answer. The final step, according to Azurin, is outdoor testing. The test should take place on a course that resembles the golfer's regular playing conditions, including firm turf, soft turf, thick rough and bunker sand. Without this step, any set of indoor numbers is only half the picture. Golfers should take time, bring their own ball, and try shots on varied surfaces to see the real difference. After all, the wedge is a scoring weapon from short range, where shots need not only power but also finesse. Indoor fitting can help eliminate weather and environmental variables, but those variables are exactly what you face every week on the course. Let the numbers guide you in the right direction, but let the real turf be the final judge.
